Getting Started:

What is the AZ Walk to Silence Tinnitus?
The AZ Walk to Silence Tinnitus is a fundraising event for the American Tinnitus Association. The main goal of the walk is to raise funds to support research for a cure for tinnitus. Last year we raised nearly $60,000 in donations from both the AZ Walk and the Jack Vernon Walk to Silence Tinnitus, which is held every June in Portland, Oregon. The Walks also serve as an educational tool for the public and helps raise awareness of the problem of tinnitus:

  • Over 50 million people in the United States have tinnitus.
  • Of those, over 16 million suffer from a severe form of tinnitus.
  • Tinnitus is currently the number one service-connected injury for veterans from all periods of service.

Why walk or participate online?
Supporters walk for a variety of reasons, most often in support of a family member, friend or co-worker who suffers from tinnitus. Tinnitus is something that everyone should be aware of, but is a condition that is poorly understood by those who do not suffer from it. Anyone can participate in the Walk – family, friends, co-workers, businesses, schools, the sky’s the limit! The main point to remember is that the Walk is raising funds to support research efforts for a tinnitus cure, which could ultimately benefit millions of people.

Do I have to be a fundraiser to do this?
Not at all! The Walk itself is a fundraising event, and we ask that each participant make a minimum gift of $25 to support ATA. We of course welcome larger gifts! If you sign up as an individual walker, your initial gift is all you have to do. If you choose to create a team, you will be raising money for ATA just by having friends join in. To give you a feel for how this can help, consider this:

  • The average full research grant awarded by ATA is $50,000.
  • The average doctoral student research grant awarded by ATA is approximately $6,000.
  • Virtually all of the money ATA awards as grants comes from individual donations from members - the more money raised by ATA, the more that can be awarded for research!

I want to host a walk of my own. How do I do that?
If you wish to host a satellite walk, or some other event in conjunction with the AZ Walk to Silence Tinnitus, please contact Wes Breazeale, ATA Development Director at

How do I register for the AZ Walk to Silence Tinnitus?
The Walk home page, explains the two options you have for walking, or you can jump directly to the Walk registration page here.  It is also easy to contact your family, friends, and co-workers using our interactive tools. If you want to start a team, you’ll be able to set up a personalized page with a unique link you can share with everyone to tell your story.

Why create a team?
In most cases, a Walk Team is organized by or for someone who is in some way directly affected by tinnitus. Walk Teams are a way to fundraise -- you don't have to physically walk if you don't want to.  But by creating a team you will be able to ask those you know to support the cause!

You can create a team name (The Smith Family Team, Team Silence, etc.) to help promote your team on the website. You will be able to create a personalized Team page as well, on which you can write your story and upload a photo to display.

What is the difference between Starting a Team and Supporting a Team?
If you plan on asking friends, family, or co-workers to support you, either by walking in Arizona or by creating a online Walk Team, you will want to start your own team.

If you just want to make a donation to the Walk to support tinnitus research, or to a specific team that already exists, you can choose the Support a Team option. If you are not supporting a specific individual and want to just make a gift to support tinnitus research, you should choose Team Arizona.

I registered last year. Do I need to go through the registration process again this year?
Yes. You must re-register for each Walk you participate in.

Will I get "spam" if I give you my e-mail address?
ATA does not share any of your personal information with any third-party. Nor do we send e-mails other than those related to your participation in the AZ Walk to Silence Tinnitus - unless you elect to become an ATA member with a gift of $40 or more. This includes, but is not limited to: confirmation e-mails when you register, notification e-mails whenever an online donation is made on your behalf, updates from your Team Captain, or other Walk-related announcements.

The team I am signing up for is not listed. What should I do?
If the team you are walking with is not listed on the Find A Team page, chances are the team has not been created yet by whoever intends to be the Team Captain. If you wish to serve as the Team Captain, you should use the "Start a Team" option on the registration screen.

How is my registration confirmed?
Once you submit your team information and donation, you will receive an e-mail confirming ATA has received your information, which will also serve as your receipt for your gift.

Team Pages:

What is a team page?
A team page is a customized web page created by the Team Captain to share information about the team with others; to list current team members and their donations; and to allow others to join the team. The Team Captain can create the team page during the registration process or at any point after that through the Walk website.

How can others access the team page?
The main way will be through the Team Captain distributing the customized team page link to current and prospective team members. There will also be a link to it on the Find A Team page that is accessible from the registration instructions page, and from the personal walker page of each member of the team.

What if I forget the specific web address (URL) of my Team page?
You may find the address of your Team page at any point through the Find A Team page.

Why are my donors listed on my personal page?
There are two main reasons for this: as a way to recognize those who are supporting you, and as an incentive for others who visit your page to support you, too! However, all online donors have the option to be listed as "Anonymous" when they make their donation.

I want to use a photo. How can I make sure it looks its best?
When you submit a photo to ATA it will be optimized for appearances on your Team page. If we have difficulty with the photo, or if it is somehow inappropriate for the page, we will contact you to find an alternate option. For those of you who are more technically oriented, the picture will be resized to be approximately 400 pixels by 400 pixels (depending on the shape of your photo.) If you want to send something along those proportions, please feel free to do so. For those who have high-quality images, please resize them to be less than 3MB/3000KB.

How can others make online donations in support of my participation in the Walk?
The primary way to receive online donations from others is to send them the link to your Team page and invite them to support you. Others may also access your page by clicking on "Find A Team" on the main menu bar. Online donations on your behalf cannot be made apart from these links.

Can others make online donations to me if I have not registered online?
No. You must be registered online in order to receive donations to your Walk Team.

How long after the Walk has ended can others still make donations to me?
Online donations can be made up to 60 days after the date of the Walk.

Do donors have the option of not being listed on my personal page?
Yes, if donors do not want their name listed on your walker page, they should check the appropriate box on the donation form indicating their preference to remain anonymous.

Is it safe to make a donation online?
Yes. ATA uses an Equifax Secure link with high-grade AES-256 256-bit encryption, the strongest encryption available, which means personal and credit card information is transmitted securely.

How is a donor's donation confirmed?
Online donors receive immediate on-screen and e-mail confirmation of their donation. They will also see their donation reflected immediately on your Team page.

What if someone does not want to donate online?
Contact ATA for instructions related to cash or check donations. You may contact Katie Fuller via e-mail or by phone at 800-634-8978 x220.

What if my question was not answered here?
If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, please feel free to contact Wes Breazeale, Director of Development, via e-mail or by phone at 800-634-8978 x224.
